Though the celebration starts two months prior to it, Maha Sashti is considered as the start of the famous Durga Puja.
Sashti means the sixth day after the new moon and from here rituals of the puja starts. The idol of Maa Durga wearing a gorgeous saree riding on her fierce lion with her four children seems to be the purest beauty that exists. In most of the puja pandals as well as houses, the idol of Goddess Durga is brought and accessorised with jewelleries on this day.
From Maha Sashti not only the real enjoyment of the people starts, but also it follows with various rituals. Some of the rituals include unveiling the face of the deity and Kalparambho. All the rituals are done by the purahit, and in the most respectful way. The puja starts early in the morning and continues. Since Bengalis have a believe from a long time back that Durga Puja is actually the arrival of Maa Durga to her father’s place along her four children Gansesha, Karthika, Saraswati and Laxmi, thus mostly the ladies participate in the entire setup.
